Metabolism: Your Body’s Powerhouse & How to Keep It Thriving

Writer: Lucy SparkesLucy Sparkes

Metabolism isn’t just about how fast you burn calories—it’s the entire network of chemical processes that keep you alive. From digesting food to repairing cells and producing hormones, metabolism is at the heart of your body’s ability to function

In nutritional therapy practice & through the functional medicine model, we look at metabolism as a dynamic system that depends on proper nourishment, blood sugar stability, and biochemical individuality (like your genetics and how they affect these processes). When metabolism is well-supported, you have steady energy, a strong immune system, a balanced mood, and a body that thrives. But when it’s out of balance? That’s when fatigue, cravings, inflammation, weight struggles, and even chronic disease can creep in.

The Blood Sugar & Metabolism Connection

Think of your blood sugar as the fuel gauge of your metabolism. When you eat, your body breaks food down into glucose (sugar), which enters your bloodstream and fuels your cells. But if blood sugar spikes too high or crashes too low, it stresses your system—leading to energy dips, cravings, hormone imbalances, and even metabolic dysfunction over time.

Balanced blood sugar is key to a healthy metabolism. Through my Nutritional therapy lens, with my clients, here are some of the areas I work in, depending on the individual circumstances, genetics & symptoms:

✔ Eating whole, nutrient-dense foods (quality proteins, healthy fats, fibre-rich carbs)

✔ Avoiding ultra-processed foods (UPFs) that may cause blood sugar spikes ✔ Supporting digestion to ensure proper nutrient absorption✔ Managing stress, which can throw blood sugar and metabolism off balance.

How Genetics Plays a Role

Each of us has a unique metabolic blueprint. Some people naturally burn carbs efficiently, while others are more prone to insulin resistance. Some metabolize caffeine or fats differently, affecting energy levels and fat storage. Understanding your genetic tendencies allows for a more personalized nutrition strategy.

For example, if your genetics show a tendency toward slower carbohydrate metabolism, you may thrive on a lower-carb, protein-focused diet to keep your blood sugar stable. If your body handles fats less efficiently, then prioritizing certain types of fats (like omega-3s) and optimizing digestion may be key.

Optimizing Metabolism with Nutritional Therapy

Instead of trying to “boost” metabolism with quick fixes, nutritional therapy supports it by:

🔹 Prioritizing blood sugar balance—steady energy, fewer cravings, better mood

🔹 Supporting digestion—nutrients only help if you absorb them properly!

🔹 Reducing inflammation—to keep metabolic pathways working smoothly

🔹 Aligning nutrition with your genetics—fuelling your body in a way that makes sense for you.

A well-nourished metabolism means stable energy, better body composition, reduced risk of chronic disease, and overall vitality.

When you work with your body—rather than against it—you can create lasting metabolic health that helps you feel your best every day.

I would love to guide you on this journey! Let’s find what works for your unique metabolism.
